Green Buildings’ priorities in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
In developed countries, the term Green Building is very common. It is considered as a role of construction sector to perform its duty in facing the impacts on the environment. But that is not the case in some developing countries for deferent reasons. Saudi Arabia is one of the examples. By being the largest producer and exporter of crude oil and having the biggest oil reserves in the world, it is normally expected that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has no problems regarding energy and therefore it has no intentions to approach the Green Building movement, especially in the residential sector. However, with its unique social, environmental and economical context, Saudi Arabia has significant issues that would urge its decision makers to take immediate action to raise the level of awareness of the Sustainability and Green buildings approach. This paper is aiming to review and discuss some statistics from housing related issues in Saudi Arabia, Riyadh in particular, which could influence the uptake of Green Buildings. It will also explore locally relevant indicator frameworks for Green Building in Riyadh.
