  • In rural areas of the Pacific Islands, where more than 70% of the population live, there is a continuing demand for household lighting for kitchens, children doing homework, etc. Much of this is still being met by kerosene lamps. In Papua New Guinea for example some $100m p.a. is spent on kerosene imported for this purpose. When transport is cut off (as happens often) the cost of kerosene becomes infinite! Modern PV systems offer a better way, and are more reliable and efficient than in the past. In particular, this paper will highlight the opportunities for LED lamps and CFL-based solar lanterns.
